title = "Effect of curing on the durability of exposed aggregate pavement",
abstract = "In recent years, exposed aggregate concrete has been used preferentially for the construction of the top surface of concrete pavement in Germany. Following placement, the exposed aggregate surface is usually sprayed with a combination of retarder and a curing agent (first curing). Depending on weather conditions, the surface mortar is brushed off after 8 to 24 hours in order to expose the coarse aggregate structure. Afterwards a curing agent (second curing) is applied to prevent the concrete surface drying. The effect of different curing procedures (first and second curing) on the durability of exposed aggregate concrete pavement was investigated. The effect of curing on the capillary pore system, which decisively affects durability, was determined by measuring capillary uptake of water. The effect of curing on durability was investigated using the CDF test for freeze-thaw deicing salt resistance. The capillary uptake of water showed that both first and second curing affect concrete microstructure, second curing having a larger effect than first curing. No effect of first curing on freeze-thaw deicing salt resistance was found for exposed aggregate concrete. Good quality second curing was observed to reduce scaling.",
