title = "Durability of pavements concrete made with fly ash",
abstract = "At present, pure Portland cement is commonly used in German road construction. Up to now pulverized fuel fly ash has not been added to the mix. To investigate the effect of fly ash on the properties of hardened concrete made with fly ash was compared with corresponding reference concretes made without fly ash. In the investigations, a dry furnace fly ash was mixed with a Portland cement or a Portland slag cement. Different qualities of curing were used. To characterise the microstructure and to get an indication of the penetration resistance of pavements concrete against aggressive agents (here gaseous agents), the air permeability according to Torrent was measured. Further investigations included measurements of the freeze-thaw deicing salt resistance and the flexural strength. Surface durability was investigated using a combined laboratory test cycle in which a field exposure was simulated. The results of the investigations show durable pavement concrete can be made when Portland cement is partly replaced by fly ash. However, the replacement of Portland slag cement by fly ash resulted in considerably more scaling during freeze-thaw deicing salt action. The quality of curing had more effect on the concrete properties investigated than the addition of fly ash. Better curing significantly improves the durability properties of the concretes with and without fly ash.",
