Abstract

Obesity, hyperlipidaemia and diabetes increase the risk of myocardial infarction. For gout an increased risk of coronary heart disease has also been assumed. These metabolic diseases are quite often combined in a patient and attributed to the Syndrome X. Apart from hereditary factors, nutrition is very important for the widespread occurrence of these diseases. Nutritional therapy is, therefore, an important measure. In all metabolic diseases, overweight and alcohol consumption, must be reduced. Treatment of obesity with diet rich in protein and poor in fat and energy in combination with physical activity and change of behaviour is of great importance. The therapy of diabetes aims at an equilibrated energy balance and adequate nutrient distribution. Continual supply of food and physical activity are important. The treatment of hypercholesterolaemia demands a decreased intake of fat and cholesterol; saturated fatty acids should be replaced in part by monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Low HDL cholesterol can be enhanced by normalisation of body weight and by increased physical activity. Common hypertriglyceridaemias are treated by normalisation of body weight and restriction of alcohol consumption. Treatment of gout demands reduction of overweight and restriction of alcohol consumption. The purine content of food must be taken into consideration. Changes of diet must be accompanied by changes in life style.
