Abstract

Like the Audi Space Frame body (ASF), the chassis and suspension of the new Audi A8 are a major new development. The four-link front suspension minimises the effects of engine torque on the steering, and allows optimum kinematic characteristics for handling dynamics. On both front-wheel drive and quattro four-wheel drive versions the rear wheels are located by an improved trapezium arm suspension, incorporating an additional link to allow accurate control of the toe angle for enhanced stability. Many of the front and rear suspension elements with wheel-locating function on the Audi A8 are made of aluminium. Large-volume rubber/metal bushes insulate the body against chassis and drive-line vibrations and make a major contribution to the car's overall refinement. Working on the basis of the very rigid ASF body structure, it was possible to optimise the suspension for best dynamic response. The car remains easily controllable when approaching the limit of adhesion, with a predictable neutral reaction or a slight understeer tendency. A new-generation ABS, with electronically controlled brake force distribution, further improves both braking performance and braking stability. Front-wheel drive and quattro versions of the Audi A8 are equipped with an electronic differential lock function as standard, which ensures controlled distribution of torque for stable acceleration from a standstill by active intervention via the brakes. An additional traction control system (ASR) is available on front-wheel drive models.
