N2 - The authors regret to inform that Fig. 5, the curves representing the profiles of enzyme activity distribution as a function of distance from the root centre for lentil and maize have been erroneously duplicated for both plants. The Results section should be corrected as follows: Acid phosphatase activity had a biphasic pattern: close to the root (0–2.5 mm) it reduced gradually, but the decrease accelerated rapidly with greater distance (2.5–3.5 mm) until levelling off to the bulk soil activity. The enzyme activities for Roots 2 and 5 in Fig. 3 (b) and (d) as well as Root 1 in Fig. 4 (c) are incorrect due to erroneous equation copying between an Excel sheet and Sigma plot software. This section is not affected as the shape of spatial distribution of enzyme activities remains the same. An additional table of original data of spatial distribution of enzyme activity along the above-mentioned roots of maize and lentil are presented below. This correction necessitates no changes in the text. These corrections neither impact the discussion nor the conclusions of the study. The authors apologize for any inconvenience.[Formula
