Abstract

This paper presents a design approach for a multiphase electrical machine with surface mounted permanent magnets. The number of phases is chosen to be nine, which ensures to meet future requirements on electrical machines designed for mobile applications. Winding design considerations will be taken into account, focusing on the specific case of concentrated windings throughout the design process. The prime parameter is represented by the number of slots per pole and phase. It is shown that specific conditions must be met in order to design a symmetrical two-layer winding. Out of the entire quantity of possible numbers of slots per pole and phase, 3/26 will be chosen as the basis of this design process. Starting with the given specification of an apparent power as high as 11 kVA, the design process will be executed iteratively, leading to the final machine design. In order to gain deeper knowledge about the machine, a Finite-Element-Analysis (FEA) is generated and compared to the results of analytical calculations.
