Abstract

A method has been developed to produce supermirrors for neutrons by DC sputtering. The super-mirrors consist of alternating layers of Ni and Ti with appropriate additions. Neutron reflectivities of 94% at twice the critical angle of total reflection for bulk nickel have been obtained by adding V to Ti and N,O to Ni. Mass production of such mirrors for the neutron spallation source SINQ has started in spring 1993. Among the various methods used to characterize the layers during the development of the production method, X-ray investigations at low and high angles have played a prominent role. Emphasis is given in this contribution to results obtained by X-ray diffraction.
