Abstract
Ernst Cramer of Zurich was one of the most distinguished modern garden architects in Europe in the post-war period, and the key figure in 20th century Swiss landscape architecture; his influence is still felt today but hardly anyone knows that Cramer drew a lot of inspiration from modern Brazilian architecture. His admiration of the work of Oscar Niemeyer, whom he met for the first time at Interbau 1957 in Berlin, and his visit to Brazil in 1960, had a lasting influence on his landscape architecture. Cramer constructed the "Theater Garden" at IGA 1963 in Hamburg after returning from this trip. This garden was built with prefabricated concrete units and high concrete walls and was more like an architectonic landscape sculpture than a traditional garden. Cramer wanted to make modern gardens for a modern society, in dialogue with modern architecture, and he also implemented this principle consistently in his project for the Postplatz in Vaduz, which was destroyed just a few years ago.
