Abstract

For two years the Chair in Forestry Ergornomics and Applied Information Technology at Munich Technological University has been running a forestry recultivation project for the "Oberdorf" lignite open-cast mine in co-operation with GKB-Bergbau GmbH, Köflach. The project will be completed in 2004 with a recultivation guide. Because of the absence of topsoil 22 experimental areas with different substrate mixtures were made from locally available materials and planted with different species of trees. Monitoring over several years will supply soil structure and phytosociological as well as soil microbiological findings for the best possible implementation of the land allocation plan. Process engineering and management aspects, which lead to optimisation of ecological and economic boundary conditions, are dealt with. The subject of this contribution is the soil structural development of the experimental areas as well as establishment of the forest vegetation and the soil micro-organisms since the start of the project.
