Both the cylinder sleeve and the piston ring, and the movement and seal of the piston ring, substantially affect wear and oil consumption, e.g. in high-speed large diesel engines. The future performance requirements of such engines can be met by novel piston ring contact surface materials such as the cK-36 coating of MAN B&W. The firm has also studied the effects of novel shapes and layouts of the piston ring set in this respect. Techniques for measurement, calculation, analysis and simulation of the piston ring movement are being refined to take into account different ring chamber pressures. (R.Hardbottle)
