Abstract
A feature of modern concrete pavements is a joint-free design with dummy joints which prevent the formation of random cracks. By matching the joint design to the traffic load, the permanent effects of joints can be kept small. The effect of temperature on the length changes of the slabs determines the joint gap width. In the longitudinal direction free mobility of concrete slabs on streets is dispensed with. The slabs are anchored. In the case of large reinforcement widths (landing strips, parking areas) and hydraulically bound foundations, anchors are either not used at all or else in special cases the three middle longitudinal joints are pinned by dowels.
