Abstract
Auxin was extracted from needles of Picea abies as free and as total IAA. It was quantified with the aid of a solid-phase enzyme immunoassay. The dependence of auxin levels on the position of the needle on the tree, shading, season, and age of the tree is described for representative examples with ages between 8 and 25 years. Marked differences were found especially for free IAA levels. The consideration of absolute auxin levels for an evaluation of the health status of conifers is questioned.
