Abstract
The deterioration of the track bed mainly depends on the compression of the ballast and the subsoil. The influence of rail, sleeper, subsoil rigidity and the distance of the vehicles' axles from each other (wheelbase) on the ballast compression is computed by the Zimmermann procedure. The dynamic wheel load fluctuation is also considered. With the aid of the ballast compression the straining of the subsoil is determined. The rigidity of the subsoil as well as of a sandwiched subgrade and frost protective layer is taken into account.
