Abstract
A joint project by the Chair for Medical Engineering of the Technical University of Munich, Krones AG, Neutraubling, and the Innovation Center for Therapeutic Medical Technology (ITEM GmbH ) was conducted to prove the suitability of stretch blow molded PET bottles, which are already used for beverages, for primary packaging for enternal and parenternal nutrition solutions. Stretch blow molded PET containers combine technical advantages, such as unbreakability, excellent gas barrier properties and low interactions with their contents, with an excellent cost efficiency. Chemical, physical an biological tests conducted at ITEM GmbH, revealed that the PET containers tested fulfilled all the requirements listed in the standards such as DIN EN ISO 15747 and DIN EN ISO 10993. An evaluation of these tests proved that PET containers can safely be used as primary packaging for enternal and parenternal nutrition solutions.
