Abstract

Basic aspects of the time- and temperature-dependent mechanical behavior of frozen soils are discussed. Based on experimental results (Orth 1985) an elastic-viscoplastic constitutive model is developed and validated by means of unconfined strain-controlled compression and creep tests. It is concluded that in spite of its simplicity the proposed model is able to simulate the creep behavior and rate-dependent strength of frozen soils realistically.
