Abstract

Solid deuterium (sD2) is a favourite converter material for the production of ultra-cold neutrons (UCN) in the next generation of UCN sources. In order to investigate sD2 properties relevant for this purpose, an apparatus for the preparation and characterization of ortho-D2 crystals has been built. It will be used for measurements of neutron transmission and scattering cross-sections as well as irradiation experiments with simultaneous optical control of the target conditions. The present paper describes the main components of the apparatus, i.e. the cryogenic optical D2 cell, the gas system, the optical photography system and the Raman spectroscopy system.
