A microstructure-model for microbial growth in aggregated soils

Publikation: Beitrag in FachzeitschriftArtikelBegutachtung

A dual porosity model is presented for solute transport and microbial growth in unsaturated aggregated soils. The model is an extension of a transport model with micro- and macro-structure considered by [1]. In addition consumption of substrate by a microbial population living in soil aggregates is considered. These aggregates are porous pellets making up a porous medium throughout which the substrate is transported. The substrate is assumed to be dissolved in soil water and to undergo adsorption, a reaction with the surface of the porous skeleton. The problem is modeled by a system of differential equations for the macro-concentration u = u(x,t), the micro-concentration u′ = u′(x,x′,t) and the concentration of carbon content of the microbial biomass w′ = w′(x,x′,t) within the aggregates. Following [1] existence and uniqueness can be proved.
