Abstract
For detection of aquatic polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) a fiber-optical sensor is described, which allows on-line and in-situ detection of PAHs over a fiber length of 50 m. The time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy applied in this work permits detection limits in the nanogram per liter range. Analytical figure of merits are given for a number of environmentally representative PAHs. By means of factor analysis, the time-resolved fluorescence emission spectra have been decomposed into their characteristic temporal and spectral profiles. Interference stemming from humic material is discussed as well.
