Abstract

This paper is intended to demonstrate the interplay of different physical and numerical models and discretization methods for the simulation of a multiphysics problem. This is done through the presentation of a certain computational approach for the coupled simulation of thin- walled structures and instationary, incompressible viscous flows. The overall approach for this fluid structure interaction problem, purely based on a spatial discretization with finite elements, will be briefly sketched. The main part of the paper will be devoted to the presentation of the numerical models for the two involved physical fields. Special emphasis will be given to aspects that particularly qualify these models to the application within such a surface coupled problem.
