Abstract
The wood-destroying fungi investigated are producing water by respiration of the wood substance and thus are able to influence the moisture content of the wood according to their capacity of decomposition. The lower limit for the growth of fungi in the case of longer test periods lies at 30 to 31% wood moisture content for the species investigated. Within higher wood moisture contents, an inhibition of wood decomposition with increasing moisture content (Lenzites sepiaria) as well as an extreme lack of moisture (Hypholoma fasciculare) was to be observed.
